For so many, Gilda Radner was the source of laughter, joy, and a pillar of the comedic community. Today, her comedy is still something widely viewed and celebrated. However, her comedy is not the only thing she is well known for.
In 1986, Gilda Radner was diagnosed with Ovarian Cancer. During her fight, Gilda realized the importance of cancer support groups and felt these services should be made available to everyone. While unfortunately Gilda lost her fight in 1989, and would not see her dream come to fruition, her husband, Gene Wilder, and many of Gilda’s close friends founded the first Gilda’s Club in New York City. Today, Gilda’s Clubs and their affiliates (Cancer Support Community) span the globe. This includes one of the largest North American affiliates located in Grand Rapids, Michigan.
I wanted a perfect ending. Now I’ve learned, the hard way, that some poems don’t rhyme, and some stories don’t have a clear beginning, middle, and end.

On January 23rd, 2023, Auto-Wares Group of Companies team members traveled to Gilda’s Club Grand Rapids. While there, the team was able to tour the facility and get a glimpse into the wonderful work this organization does. Gilda’s Club now goes beyond cancer support and provides counseling and support for grief of any kind. From crafts to meals, fitness, and everything in between, they provide support in so many ways. Because of all that they do, they rely heavily on the support of donors and volunteers.
Auto-Wares Group of Companies team members were able to gather food goods and prepare a meal for Gilda’s ‘Supper Together’ program. This program allows those in need of counseling and support services, to not have to worry about preparing a meal for themselves and their family. The hope is to take that burden off their shoulders and allow themselves and their families to focus on the healing that they need.
