Spotlight on Excellence: Kerner’s Auto Service

At Auto-Wares Group of Companies, we take pride in supporting our Certified Service Centers that go above and beyond for our customers and their communities. This month, we’re excited to highlight Kerner’s Auto Service, a standout facility located in Shelby Township, Michigan, known for its exceptional service, technical expertise, and commitment to quality. Kerner’s Auto Service was recently featured in Shop Owner magazine on Talking a Good Game: Why Communication Plays Such a Role in Shop’s Success. They exemplify the standards and values that define our network – and we’re proud to share their story.

Since 1973, what began as a modest two-bay gas station has transformed into a modern, technology-driven repair facility – thanks to the leadership and vision of current owner Mike Martin.

Mike Martin, Owner, Kerner’s Auto Service

Tradition and innovation have both played influential roles in Martin’s journey from tinkering with cars in his youth to repairing his first car with a blown engine, to college and corporate America. Martin earned a degree in human resource management at Wayne State University, and a graduate degree in labor relations, then worked as an HR manager for an automotive quality control company. This background proved invaluable with his expertise in employee relations and management strategies when he stepped into the role of shop owner in 2011.

Since then, Martin has made significant investments in diagnostic equipment, equipped every employee with a computer, and fully embraced technology to stay competitive, enhance service quality, and attract new customers. Guided by his expanding vision, Kerner’s is now outfitted to handle increasingly complex repairs while delivering dependable service.

As noted in Shop Owner magazine, “this decision demonstrates a keen awareness of market dynamics and a commitment to specializing in areas where Kerner’s can truly excel.”

Martin and the crew at Kerner’s Auto Service actively participate in our Auto-Wares programs to leverage our resources, knowledge, and training to help stay on top of the newest techniques in a rapidly growing industry.

As team leader, Martin empowers his technicians by creating growth opportunities, valuing their certifications, and implementing regular testing and 40 hours of training each year. He says, “I’ve equipped my team to take care of any customer who walks in, assuring them that they’ll have the same experience no matter which of us they speak with.”

Through building a foundation of trust with his employers and customers alike, Martin understands the power of community engagement. Kerner’s Auto Service has a people-first philosophy that promotes loyalty and reduces turnover.

As an active member of several advisory councils, Martin promotes the benefits of education outside his bays, giving high school students eye-opening experiences. Community connections are Martin’s go-to marketing strategy to invest in building customer loyalty. Kerner’s has an annual company Christmas card contest, sponsors local school and sports organizations, hospitals, and partners with their local Auto Value for annual promotions like the “Brakes for Breasts” campaign to support research for the Cleveland Clinic Breast Cancer Vaccine Fund.

To maximize efficiency and ensure people receive the best service, effective communication is essential in all aspects. This is how Mike Martin operates his service center. Shop Owner puts it best– “Martin has transformed Kerner’s Auto Service into a thriving business that makes a real difference in the lives of its customers.”
